Ok so brought a new lens and it turned up yesterday, very exciting times that no one else understood at work or home :( I got a 35mm 1.8G DX, and I must say after just faffing for a few minutes on my lunch break, I was really impressed. Took the opportunity of Scarlett being in the garden and tried to get a close up of her face/eye kinda look.
Oh by the way Scarlett won first prize in a garden competition with her photographs she took of a dandelion:roll:

Anyway here is a capture from the new lens

Now that is a thin DOF not sure if the focus looks 100% on the eye.

No I dont think it is either, and at the time I couldn't really tell on the back of the camera, but I like it all the same, just a bit quirky lol

 Don't let Scarlett join this forum... She will show us all up and win image of the month with those Dandelion pictures ! :p

Congrats on the new new toy/lens.

That DOF is super shallow. It seems to have perfectly focused on the very end of the eyebrow and everything else is super smooth.
The eye looks awesome though. Very painterly and soft.

Hahahaha no I have kept this site a secret from her lol

She had her camera out running about after me in the garden then when I wanted her to keep still and stop frowning she was just wanting to get away and take more photos.......Don't blame her. More practice needed me thinks :)

We will know who it is when image of the month is a buttercup, whilst everyone else are uploading rare and wonderful pictures that just aren't as pleasing to the eye ! :p haha

Bless. She sounds like she loves photography. I hope she finds a fantastic career from photography if that what makes her happy. (P.s you may be able to sneak some of her pro lenses :p)

I was at dinner with some family the other night and spoke with a family friend who I'd not met. He was a detective with he police for over 30 years. After we got talking, I mentioned photography being a new hobby of mine and his eyes instantly lit up and demanded to know every detail about my camera, what lens I owned and my regular spots locally for shoots... I found out for 30 years he had worked with the detectives as a crime scene photographer and he's finally hanging up his uniform for a new position as a lecturer in crime photography.
He told me along the 30 years of photographing almost everything from macro to the milky way (both work purposes and for pleasure) he had been offered multiple jobs worldwide as a photographer.
It really opened my eyes personally, as I only think of photography as a hobby and not a career.

:)

I would have been enthralled with that conversation, must have been incredible interesting and some what morbid at times doing a job like that, How nice is that when you speak to someone who also has an interest or at least want to know more. Would make a very interesting Flickr page huh? lol
I know what you mean though I only took this hobby up now 3 years or so ago, and to this day just a hobbyist, my mum who thinks I take the best photos in the whole world (bless her) thinks I should go professional...... That is until I informed her of the costs and the fact that I work full time and the amount of learning i still have to achieve before I'm even close to that level of photography. And I don't know if I would want to turn my really enjoyable hobby into my job? But Scarlett, could go places with this, as she is so young still, she can do the flower landscape taking shots whilst learning her camera/s and hopefully take it further.

:)

There were around 10 family members at the table and everyone had stopped and went quiet because his stories were fantastic. He works local, so all of the stories he was telling us involved a major crime we were all familiar with.
An example of one of his stories, he told us about how he had to follow the trails of a getaway vehicle after a robbery/murder occurred. His team had to follow an off-road route toward a quarry in the middle of the night. They found some tracks and he got out to take photographs and spotted a mummy badger taking her cubs for a wander. He said he forgot what he was doing and instinctually began following the badger feeding her cubs with his lens lol. He found out the badgers had been culled in that area some time before, and his shots were the first sighting of the cubs located in the area of the quarry since.

I'd love to have a job which I loved to do. And I mean really loved and enjoyed. I worked in a 9-5 and it paid the bills but I personally wasn't happy. So for anyone to take photography from a hobby to a job, I salute them and wish them all the best. Especially Scarlett. Fingers crossed she has a bright future doing what she loves :)

What a nice story, quite funny that they were looking for baddies and he ended up with badgers lol, Oh yeah I mean if someone said to me would you like to photograph for National Geographic, travel company (that would be nice) or work with Richard Attenborough as a tog, I would jump at the chance, hell yeah. However this wedding photo stuff, I don't think I would have the patience for it, that kind of thing. I'd probably end up hating it.
Doing some more photography with her this evening when I am home as she asked me this morning, maybe i will ask her about what she if it is something she would like to do as a job, think it could be a very interesting conversation indeed. I was even looking at upgrading her camera this afternoon, but she has the smallest hands and at the moment is like a hammer on the shutter button that every subject ends up in the top half of the shot maybe in a year or so lol.

I must admit, I only considered wedding photography as the main decent income photography job. But there seems to be plenty other opportunities work wise. I wouldn't really be interested in wedding photography, but i'd love to do wildlife and landscape photography. I'd love to learn videography too as I think that is really where the money is. I instantly think of big shows like David Attenborough - Wonderful World or videoing Top Gear with Clarkson and co :p

Bless her. All in good time. It won't be long until she is on here sharing her incredible pictures :p

Ah she's cute. That lens has great promise.

I know what you mean about having someone to talk about photography with, it seems so hard to come by! I've met one guy at work who does a fair bit of work nearby so am hoping to join in at some point. Other than that it's just you guys and Mr Spuriosity when I am explaining why I need a new lens/gadget ha ha

They say that so many people are now doing photography, yet I haven't met anyone yet that does it at even my level, Everyone just seems to look like a startled rabbit with half smiles on their faces when i start chatting about photography, the facial expressions get more intense if I mention lenses and focal lengths, imagine what it like when I mention apertures :icon_tweed:
