Pretty sure this is not right?!
Do I need some kind of spacer for clearance?

The wheel knobs on the Benro head rubbing against the tripod body. Will ruin the tripod in no time.
Any ideas on this?

If the base centre plate thread is long enough you could make a metal or plastic shim a couple of mm thick to sort the problem. What do you think of the Rollie build quality? It looked very good to me.

It certainly doesn't look good. As you say a spacer under the head should solve the issue, a suitable size penny or plate washer might be enough, failing that a browse of the pluming section of a DIY store should find something adequate. :)

Despite the tripod being 20 days late! I have to admit, it FEELS ok, not used it yet tho... A shame I have an issue out the bag with this benro head... who's fault is this? I thought two big brands like this would have been a bit more universal?

Would i glue this shim on then? Shame I have to fornicate about with Captain DIY.

Where did you get the tripod from?

It is very unusual for a head to have anything that projects lower than the mounting face. Certainly nothing I've seen before but then I've never gone the feared head route either.

No glue, just find or make a disk of material about the same diameter as the base of the head and stick a hole through the centre to let the mounting thread through and then do up nice and tight.

I got the tripod from Rollei, 18 days late to Cyprus.
But now this issue. Is this just a bad match or what? Definitely can't use it as it is..

Nice but it's £40! And looks hodgy bodgy... And would take weeks to get to Cyprus.

I should not have to do this with a £700 set up??
Unfortunately blame isn't going to help here. If you didn't look at the head before you bought it you can't really blame anyone that your mix and match isn't quite perfect. A couple of mm of shim ought to sort your issue it really isn't a huge drama to pack it up a little and then it will work fine.

A lot of reputable sellers of this head (on the WEX site it's highlighted in red) in their product descriptions, quite a few reviews, and also somewhere in Benro's technical notes as well state that if using this head on a flat plate tripod then to get the clearance you need (and a lot of sellers do bundle for a few quid more) the gdhad1 adaptor plate. On their own these plates are about 20 - 25€.

There's a few geared heads from different manufacturers that need standoffs with them the heads aren't directly designed to couple to a flat plate as it blocks clearance.

So a small shim of 5mm is not what I need here? I need this actual Benro product?

Why should you need the Benro version? It might be the easier route, as you know its tall/wide enough and will allow a strong connection but if you look arround you can find other solutions - easily if the thread on your tripod is long enough that it doesn't need extension.

Can you give me an idea of a solution?
Something that won't look ugly and actually work. A large piece of aluminium block with male and female thread?

As mentioned above, just a thin washer between it and the tripod should do the trick if there's enough screw length. Perhaps something like this.

Hi looking at the clearance it looks like it needs a bit more than a few MM, to get the full range of motion the head offers??

Here is the thread, not sure how much of a shim you can get on that.... i need least 1 inch shim, and clearly that won't leave any thread..

Or would a different plate all together be better idea?

Not much thread to work with there, if you google tripod spacer there are plenty out there for a lot cheaper than £40. Even Amazon does the exact same one for £29 and there a other non branded ones which will do the same thing for around £20. Alternatively a local machining shop could probably knock one out fairly easily and I wouldn't imagine charge much for such a small simple piece, I mean it is just a block of billet and some 3/8" thread on each side.

In that case I'd be inclined to just buy the Benro part, it's not a lot of money compared against the rest of the kit to get it spot on.

I'd buy it tomorrow but living in Cyprus now and getting anything here is a mountain worth of work!

Try and find a local machinist in that case.

the voyager: That tripod and head set-up does indeed look as if it's not the best combination without something added! However, the solution should be very simple to make - buying a plate with the threads etc. seems expensive (no surprise there though!) and as you say the delivery to Cyprus is prohibitive. It might sound like a lot of hassle but I don't think it will be: this is what I would do: get in touch with one of the model engineering clubs over there in Cyprus and ask them if they have a member who would be able to make a threaded spacer plate for you. First-off, simply ask if they know someone with a lathe who could do a very small job for you - for that is what it is - and if you could get in contact with that member somehow. Once you've managed to get in contact, it's easy to describe what you need and I'm sure there's a model engineer or a DIY hobby engineer who will be able to make a fine job of it very quickly and at very little cost. These things are indeed a lot of trouble when they do not seem to be able to find, but once you discover the lathe (or someone with a lathe!) they're simplicity itself. Have a look at where you can see the support I made for my Mamiya RZ-67 many years ago with the odd bit of brass and aluminium which I had lying around, the screws in the mounting plate are just turned from round stock and given a 1/4-inch Whitworth thread which is what you want for the tripod too unless you are using the larger mount. I do have some contact details for a model engineering railway club there in Cyprus if that would help, but I don't wish to simply publish that list or names here on a forum for the sake of their own privacy, naturally, I hope you understand. You are welcome to contact me for these details if you need to. All of this would be a question of days, not weeks or months!
