Nice shot, but I think grooming in horses and ponies is more a bonding / socialising thing rather than removing nasties.
They will also stand head to tail and swish flies off one another.

In the New Forest they rub their rear ends up the tree bark. Some poor ponies are covered in ticks. It must drive them crazy.
