So as not to burn the whole town to the ground.

On the other side of the lock a little down river you can see loads of dinghies with fishermen in. It is quite common if they are not having much luck. If one of their mates is on shift at the Hydro Electric power station they mobile him and get him to open the sluices to let the fish down river :)

The lock fills from the bottom. Its It's weird seeing a sort of boiling effect in quite a few places as the lock fills. At my last knowledge it cost the equivalent of £100 to go through the lock. So when possible a boat would wait ( if another was in sight) they could split the cost.

I can see that cost for a commercial lock. We have a few around here run by local boating societies and they're much less expensive. I really have no idea how much it costs a super freighter to go through the Welland Canal locks though.
