We used to make fibreglass canoes at school. They were very strong. If not a little heavy.

Way back when, we made canvas covered cedar strip canoes. Those suckers were real heavy.

I was on a school canoe trip four of us last twit canoes. Ours was one like you meno. We must have had the oldest the school had. When we came up to a weir and needed to lift the canoe out of the river. It took the four of us to carry ours. Not because of the weight of the tent, food and all our kit. But to stop the canoe braking in half. We had one each end and the other two supporting it in the middle...

It sounds like it. But we managed ok. No health and safety in those days. Just good fun.

We did grow up in different times then. Heck, we used to tie together anything that would float and call it a raft. We survived quite well without H&S. :)

Was that when the guy on horseback came around with a firebrand and lit the gas lamps?

Our nearest street lamp was 6 miles away, in town. We navigated using the neighbourhood farm porch lights.

Bit more rural to where I lived. It was either playing in the road. Or up the top field. Or in the bottom fields.

The fields, forests and lakes were our playgrounds.

My brother once paddled to an island in the local lake on a big block of polystyrene

That's one way of putting it. But in some cases self elimination might be a good idea.

It must be nice to live where you can cross into another country on a day trip.
