Our plinth lights did not work when I switched them on this morning. We haven't used them for I don't know how long.
Anyway I thought I would try and mend them. Seeing as I did not fit them. They were done when we had a new kitchen several years ago. I thought best start by the light switch. Took the plinths off. No joy. Worked my way round the kitchen taking the plinths off and checking the wiring. No joy. Got to the last plinth. Which was the worst to remove. Still no joy. Took the transformer off and checked it's output. That was ok. Thinking "WTF". I then looked at one of the LED connectors in the mass of wire. Only to notice somehow the wire was cut in two. How and when that happened I don't know. I can only presume it got trapped when the plinth was fitted years ago and finally the vibration from the dishwasher and washing machine made the thin wire cable break.
Anyway I replaced the severed wire with a block connector and yeah... They now work ok. Its great when you mend something you are not familiar with...

It was. But the dripping tap was a different thing. I took the Britain's water filter tap apart as its been dripping for a while. I wasn't too confident in being able to do anything with it as the valve has ceramic parts. From experience you can not mend them. I was right. I re- greased it but it still dripped. Ordered a new valve online. See how we go then.
I had a similar problem with the " joystick" taps on the bathroom sink and the bidet. The valves needed replacing as repair was out of the question

The cartridges in those taps just screw out and drop in a replacement.

Yes that is correct. I took my taps apart to see if I could repair them. Then bought yge cartridges off ebay. Replacing them is an easy job if the tap threads are not seized up.

I don't mind replacing cartridges, but I'm a tightwad and they cost far more than a package of tap washers.

Yes that's very true. But if you have the taps with a cartridge in you have little choice.

Also true, and we have to pay extra for modern innovation all the time.

Yes. You could not beat " old school" stuff. At least the likes of you and I could repair it.

My '69 Austin A1100 had a 1098cc motor with a bit of a warped head. I always carried a spare head gasket and some anti-freeze and I could strip that bugger, change the headgasket and be back on the road in under an hour.

I had to pay someone to do my milling since I didn't have access to a milling machine.

Things like that. I hope I can get my work mates to do them for me if need be. Now I have retired

Same here. I did a lot for many of the apprentices who started under me. Most of them return favours now and again.

As they say, if you don't learn something each day, it was a day wasted.

I hate it if I for whatever the reason feel I have wasted my day. If I am feeling my day is being wasted. I do my upmost to change the situation.

Just like today here. There's a snowstorm and warnings out to not drive, but I have some cardboard to cut up and get into my recycle bin for tomorrow so I'll at least get that done.

Yes. In that respect your day isn't wasted. Its not your fault that the weather spoilt or changed your plans for the day. But at least you can salvage some useful tasks
