Looking at adding this to my D500 for mainly shooting rugby. Any thoughts would be grateful. Can currently get one in excellent condition for £2k

Nikon AF-S 300mm f/2.8G IF-ED VR

Very nice. Fast AF, great image quality, and works well with all of Nikon's teleconverters. If 300mm meets your needs for reach with rugby and you can get it at a good price, it sounds like a winner.

Would be using it with a 70-200 and based behind the goal lines covering the full length of the field

Just hired one for the weekend. I've calibrated it to my D500 but I've noticed there is quite a prominent whirring sound when focusing and seems to stay on for a few seconds after the shot is taken. Is this normal for this lens???

A good question but difficult to gauge your understanding of "prominent." Autofocus typically moves a group of lens elements that are fairly close to the lens mount. This group of elements are much larger than on normal lenses so it uses a larger electric motor which you likely can hear. However, once focused that motor no longer is active. Then there is the image stabilization which also uses electrical components to dampen the effect of lens movement, it may stay on after the shot is taken in the event follow-up shots are made.

The only way to determine whether there is an issue is to compare to other lenses of the same make and model.

The post focus noise is probably the Vibration Reduction.

I have the Nikon 300 f2.8 VR lens on my D500, works great and sharp, the noise you refer to is the VR.

But for Rugby I use the Nikon 200-500 VR lens.

I use the 200-500 now but where I shoot up in the Brecon Beacons and trees all around the light ain't the best that's why I'm looking at that lens. Decisions Decisions!!!!

I shoot at the Brecon Ground. Both of these were taken with the Nikon 200-500.

But don't dismiss the Nikon 300 f2.8 VR Lens as I love mine for my aviation photography. But with rugby I prefer some zoom to be able to move around with the action.

Side joke: I thought you were not allowed any equipment that may injure another player? That lens could do some damage ;)
