Finally....after 3 rigs, and a lot of time, and confusion, I got the double pendulum working. These are a couple of the very first successes (well... in my eyes!)
Comments and cries (or even, crits) welcomes as always.curve1.jpgcurve2.jpg

Thanks Dave. Your wish etc etc...

There are two pendulums: the first swings to and fro in and out of your computer screen. The second is pivoted at the bottom of the first, and swings along the face of your screen (ie right angles to the first). The second has the torch, and a large lump of lead to make it swing longer. The lower pendulum is on a turnbuckle, to allow fine tuning of the bottom length, as the ratios have to be very accurate to get good images (otherwise, they look like my hair when I get up in the morning). Hopefully you can see all this from the photos I've attached (no comments about the state of the garage please...). The bearings I have used are roller bearings from skateboard wheels. Look up Paul Wainwright Photography, which is where I saw this images first. My main worry was putting my camera underneath a couple of pounds of lead, stuck on to the assembly with little more than duct tape and jubilee clips!

The whole assembly

Wow that’s really impressive results considering how difficult it must be to get even results.

Thanks Dave - it was so hard....been trying for about 8 months. 2 different rigs, and finally contacted Paul Wainwright himself, for help. He was great and explained where I was going wrong!

You went to great lengths to get it right, and that you did, beats my piece of string somewhat .. :D

Thanks Paul, now it's set up I can rattle off a few when I want...though I think I'll get bored now that I have succeeded!

Couple more from today. Varying the angle of release, and the time period.

Very much better than the results I got (just hanging a string of LED lights from the ceiling and swinging away)

Thanks Edward. The problem solving was actually quite fun, even if maddening at times!

been trying for about 8 months
I'm not surprised! Well persevered though - love whizzing the screen up and down on the second one - is it the Moire effect? Dunno but the movement is fun :D
