One that I haven't stuck in here yet is LightZone. It's an open source editor with much the same handling as PS. Registration is now required to get the download links, but it still remains free.

P.S. RAW and NEF are recognised.

Image Magick. This a command line tool but suits doing something repetitive so a large set of images.

Image Magic is one of the web server tools built into most servers which is why web sites can show images at different sizes, for instance. I didn't realise it was stand alone as well.

There is some software I use in my workflow, which hasn't been listed here. Think this will be useful for others.

1. Faststone image viewer (FastStone Image Viewer, Screen Capture, Photo Resizer ... ). I use this for initial import and culling. I then do a second round of culling in the photo editor.
2. NameThatLens (NameThatLens - Jazzycamel Photography ). I use this with my manual lenses to add the lens details to the photos.
3. Geosetter (Description - GeoSetter ). I use this to add gps coordinates to my photos.
4. Freefilesync (FreeFileSync: Open Source File Synchronization & Backup Software ). I use this to sync photos between my local disc and external disk.
