We have had suggestions on the forum from members that forum competitions, especially the bluebell challenge and annual fungi challenge have been long running and perhaps a change is needed. Indeed, in the last few years, entries have dwindled for the competitions. For example, although Covid this year may have had an influence, in the bluebell challenge in 2018 there were 33 entries, this year there are only 9. Also, the bluebell challenge and fungi challenge are limiting to UK members somewhat, and as we are a multinational forum, we would like overseas members to be able take part in all competitions.

So, what we would like to hear is your suggestions for competition themes to replace these competitions, as without imput by members, it is then difficult somewhat to start off new competitions.

We also have a mobile phone competition, that is an easy one for all to enter, there is no specific subject - are members still keen on this?

Another competition is the Christmas competition, mention has been made of this due to the seasonal differences in some countries - members thoughts?

A monthly competition which was stopped due to lack of entries a few years back, was the Moderators Challenge. This was a subject posted on a monthly basis by the moderators for competition entry, the winners then selected by the Moderator team. Would you like to see this back?

So there you have it about competitions, we do need your imput to help change occur. Please post suggestions/comments into this thread below.

The bluebell challenge could simply be replaced by a spring blooms challenge. That way there would be no excuse for all the lazy togs out there to point their camera at something :}

I think in general we need to advertise the comps more outside the forum. I am sure many members could talk about the comps and their entries on social media. How about all the regulars try and make an effort to promote this place. I only found it by luck and glad I did as the very useful advice given here has helped me no end. It is very refreshing to talk more about the subjects than the kit, something that makes these forums stand out IMO.

It is a sad fact that forums are a little out of favour at the moment. There are so many platforms calling for our attention. I quite like the forum format as you can find information far easier than any of the big social media sites. They IMO are more aimed at instant gratification, or for those who just want a rant.

Good post, Brian.
A monthly competition ...
I wonder if the competition(s) were bi-monthly or quarterly instead whether this would produce more interest and make it/them a little more special than the regular as clockwork Image of the Month? One of the things I find about the monthly competitions is they are quite frequent and by the time entries are coming in over the last few days I've usually forgotten about the competition and then it's too late. Perhaps a competition should be irregular and appears when the Moderators think it might be popular? For example not over Christmas but maybe kick one off in mid January.

I like the idea of bringing back the Moderators Challenge - how's about also having the membership judging the Moderators Entries? Say four consecutive competitions with members entering then one with the Moderators entering? Back in the day, I always made more effort with the Moderators Challenge than the other competitions.

As for subject ideas, there are many nature and bird photographs posted - at least we have a bunch of members who could enter these. Subjects such as Water Bird, Bird in Flight, Bird with Wing Span less than 8"(?), Finch?

Landscape photographs are still appearing so perhaps subjects like Storm, Snow, Woodlands?

Rather more testing, and I've no idea how popular the entries would be but abstract subjects like Time and Negative Space could spice up the interest again. I found those two subjects particularly taxing but also learned much from them especially negative space and how this can be used in photographs.

Another thought is why not have international competitions like Thanksgiving, Kangaroos or Paris? Maybe not the last one but there have been quite a few Americans and Australians joining - why not have a competition or two or more aimed for them?

Above are thoughts, hoping that it might spark someone else into thinking of something much better.

And a detail, PS - I think having a photograph taken after the competition entry is open should stand as it hones the skills rather better in my opinion.

G'day Brian

You are asking for responses to 'competitions' and also the 'Moderators Challenge' ... I have responded elsewhere to the other thread along these lines too

Personally - I do not get excited by comps / challanges ........ mostly as I am an old bugga and "been there - done that" sort of thing gets in the way of trying hard to come up with a comp entry ... so these days I just post recent images and I'm happy with that exposure

8. Please do not comment on individual photos posted. PLEASE NOTE THE THREAD IS FOR THE POSTING OF IMAGES ONLY, AND IS NOT A DISCUSSION THREAD.
Maybe after the competition we could have a discussion thread on the entries with a little critique to help people improve, or at least for those that agree to it in their entry.

Or instead of a vote, maybe use a ratings plugin. We could have criteria such as effort, composition, content, difficulty etc. So all entries get a rating and the highest rating wins. I think there is such a plugin for this forum software, or at least there used to be for an older version, not looked recently. With the entrant adding a little write up of how they got their shot we would have more to base ratings on and more to discuss afterwards.

I find the variation of Challenges a bit confusing. ie The weekly challenge, then there is a monthly challenge, then we have these annual challenges.

Maybe its just me, and the brain is not too turned on.

I like the challenges, and indeed run the monthly challenge on the E-Group Olympus web page. Over the year, points add up to the E-Group photographer of the year.

I often forget to get a photo in, as maybe the weekly one is too often, and the monthly does not give a lot of time to get it sorted. I do think there should clear winners, perhaps voted on my members. Maybe winning photos should be displayed on the Home page for that month/week.

Either way the moderators do a great job, and deserve plenty of recognition and thanks and an e-pint or two...:D

Some refreshingly new ideas, Mark - I like the idea of gaining points throughout the year for photographs and wonder if this could be incorporated into the IotW judging? Sorry, Moderators but this would mean more work for you when you judge. For each photograph you see, you'd award points say, up to five per photograph. 1 = snapshot 5 = quality image.

The points would be added by you at the end of the week and each member who'd posted photographs that week would receive their points for each photograph and these points would be placed into a table. So if a member posted six okay shots and two snapshots (you choose the standards required) that would be worth 12 + 2 so that member would receive 14 points for that week. Over the year the points would be added at the top three would be rewarded at the annual Photographer of the Year awards. Perhaps at the end of each week the table could be updated to show the new scores.

Yet again, an idea but this might be too onerous on the moderators as it would require a fair amount of bookkeeping on their week and this might put them off judging.

Perhaps instead, if the Moderators League was created, then judging could be done like this and instead of single photographs being entered for each "competition/challenge" it could be a set of three or five photographs for one or two (or more) of the challenges. Topics could be Produce Two Portraits or Five Different Animals and then the moderators award points per photograph and the table/league is created and updated after each challenge. And rather than every moderator voting for each challenge take it in turns to have say 3-4 voting but keep it quiet as to who is voting and when.

A little more complicated than a simple 1st, 2nd and 3rd but members might be more inclined to have a go as I sometimes wonder if there's an attitude of "I won't bother entering because I'll never win" - at least a member might be more successful on a hidden points system with results shown in a table updated as the year went along.

Please keep the comments coming. The weekly challenge has been mentioned, for the others of you who do participate every week, how do you feel about the format of this being changed?

Hi! I really wouldn't mind if the 'Weekly Challenge' format was changed. I don't post elsewhere because I don't think my images are up to IOTM standard;)!

Are there any more forum members who would like to leave comments/suggestions about forum competitions?
edit: it has been suggested to change the fungi challenge to something like autumnal, remember though that that is seasonal too, restricting it somewhat to the Northern Hemisphere.

I would say the forum needs more interaction from members really. There seems to be a lot of sleepers and very few actually doing anything? How many actual active member are there?

I personally have always been confused by the Weekly Challenge, and I work here ;) It seems no one posts photos taken during that week so goes counter to the "weekly" part of it. As to your photos, you do not know unless you enter them!

I agree with Don, enter them. It’s always good to see what others are shooting, their style etc. It helps give us all ideas for our own shots.

We can track active members hourly, daily, monthly, whatever you choose except for total unique active members. Here's what the chart looks like for May 22 to June 22 this year:

I was sitting here trying to think how to answer this.
I totally agree with the sentiment expressed by Electra, but had already come to the conclusion that what Don says is correct, and there is no reason not to post elsewhere (although I'm not saying I will do it that often). The great thing for me about the weekly challenge is that you can dip in or out as you like, although that is also true of the other challenges, and that if you can't get out during the week you can use an archive shot That is one element I personally think it would be a shame to lose.(I'm sure some images are taken specifically for the challenge:) ).

It‘s been staring at us in the face for too long!!:eek:

In addition to the above why don’t we have a simple, weekly Beginners Competition and if someone wins twice then they’re not allowed to enter again. This should encourage those who don’t think they have a chance of winning to enter.

I’m rather keen on the League/points/table idea for a new competition.

Separate idea, why stick to just Moderators judging competitions? I”m sure there are plenty of us who’d be happy to judge on an occasional basis and send the results in.

I like the weekly challenge as it makes me get out and take pictures. (or snapshots in my case). Also having a points league is a good idea.
Astro or Night Photography is something I would certainly participate in.

The moderators aren’t looking to solely judge competitions Edward. The only competition in the past that was judged purely by the moderators was the moderators challenge. There was the competition also that occasionally took place of ‘challenge the moderators’ which was judged by the forum members. All competitions should be a forum voting format, to give every one a chance to decide.
