G'day mate

Not being a UK / US resident I do not know the mob you refer to, however ...
Back in the days when I was an SLR user I certainly did purchase lenses from HK, and went for the higher-priced offerings while doing that

From my manufacturing-industry days, I well realise that while the maker's desire is to produce everything to 100% quality, some items fall short when compared with the target. These items, even though they have the QA sticker attached (used to) go out at reduced prices to HK and Singapore first, then Fiji and other asian places afterwards. I would presume that today's activities are much the same

For me - to get a lens of 95% quality for 60% ~ 75% of the local price was something that I was prepared to live with
For you ...... caveat emptor

Are grey imports defected? In any way whatsoever?

I have bought a couple of grey import lenses, and have not found any defect at all.

Years ago, in my army days, Singapore was seen as a place to get bargains. But not so sure these days. Unless you are very lucky to find a bargain, I think both Singapore and Hong Kong are no longer bargain basements..

I've also brought Grey Imports literally dozens of times over the last 10/12 plus years with absolutely no issues at all. The reason they are cheaper is because we are being spanked for the duty :confused:

You mean we are not being spanked for duty?

You know what I mean
To reiterate we in the UK pay more because we are being spanked for the duty so by buying Grey we save the tax :exit:

Your prices also include tax. Our prices are before tax over here. Same in the US, but the US has various sales taxes by state or none at all.

Hi Don
I've brought from B&H Photo in New York in the past (HUGE great photo/video and literally anything photographic camera store) and it was still cheaper even with State tax than buying from the UK !!

It is often cheaper to buy from B&H here as well. Even with the exchange rate. They even take care of any import duties and tax to import into Canada up front.

Panamoz ship from HK direct - why because I have bought a lot from them and the tracking information starts in China.

Short of shelling out loads to fly out there yourself Panamoz etc is your best bet.

I've never used Panamoz or AFAIK any other grey importer but do often but direct (usually for cheap items).
Ordering direct you might sometimes avoid paying for import duty/VAT but if the cost is above a threshold you normally end up having to pay it. Not only that but you usually get stung for about £20 by the courier for customs clearance. There have been several occasions when duty only came to ~£1 so this handling charge is often significant. Last time with a used lens from Japan the extra charges where more than the item cost (and aren't refundable so I was really pissed to find the rear element missing & the mounting thread damaged...)

If the goods are above the Customs threshold (I think now £18) then it's probably well worth going via an importer or sticking to companies that pay customs charges up front (as B&H will). I certainly won't buy another lens direct from Japan.

Why buy from Japan, when they are actually made in China?

Only for the USA market do say Fuji make 80% in China and 20% Japan, because of the trade issues they have, which enables enables them to say Made in Japan, but they're all mostly made in China otherwise.

The large format Fuji lens I was buying came from Japan, as do many other lenses.

I buy from einfinity e-infin.com , have done for years. No issues with warranty return or even 'change my mind' returns.
