What a beaut image - wonderful colours and the eye / beak combination in perfect alignment
Just a thought- any possibility of toning down the background so as not to dominate the bird?
(if you're not sure coz you're a pp beginner, there's others here who can offer suggestions)

That is gorgeous. Such detail! I agree with Phil that the branches are a bit of a distraction in otherwise a clean shot. I see you have given permission for us to edit your images. I hope you don't mind. I use Affinity Photo. It is just as good as photoshop elements however a third of the price and now we cannot buy photoshop outright but pay a monthly fee, I find Affinity Photo is just as good. Anyway, here is the edited version, using a mix of cloning, inpainting brush and the smudge tool.
Cheers, Ann.

Thanks very much for your comments they are very much appreciated.
Thanks Ann for removing the branch I have not learnt the skills to be able to do that yet. And yes anyone who can tone down the background please go ahead.
Many thanks for comments and help.

G'day Martin

With other members offering their tweaks, may I also offer mine for you to contemplate :p

I have
a) (in PS Elements) selected the bird and branch, then inverted the selection so that I get the background
b) used Curves to darken the background as selected above (as I originally suggested above)
c) done a qwik clone of the twig meeting the bird's head

Thoughts?

My versions of your image, which is fantastic BTW. Lovely colours on the Kingfisher and I love that you captured the back of the bird and the head turned to see what you're up to. I cropped to basically the R.O.T. which also gave it positive and negative space. By lightening the BG it makes the bird POP a bit more. Then I removed the branches and reduced the colouring in the background. 2 versions with BG colours changed. Also dodged the eye to brighten it up a bit. This was a couple of minutes in Photoshop.

#1 - Blue BG (Just for fun).

#2 - Green BG (lightened original).
