For no reason in particular I have been attempting to use my speed light and a led camping lantern to create some flattering light for a gold ring.

I think I really need a second speed light to get the shadows a bit better exposed but I liked how these came out.

G'day mate

As experiments in pose and lighting the image seems quite okay to me
Maybe to boost the shadows a tad more, try an alfoil reflector just out of frame ... crinkle it a bit then flatten out a bit to avoid direct reflections

Good idea Phil, thanks! I just rigged one up using a bit of foil as a reflector for the camping lantern and it is a whole lot better.

That foil definitely worked. There's another trick to add to my bag now.

Cheers guys, I've just commandeered a disposable aluminum baking tray(and finished the last brownie in it :D) which is a lot heavier gauge to try making a reflector out of. Should be a more permanent alternative to the foil and it holds its shape a lot better.

G'day Ryan

The alfoil reflector must -not- be smooth surfaced !!! as if it is, it will act as a mirror and you will get unwanted light-streaks across the image
You do need to crinkle the foil gently then smooth and glue to a cardboard backing piece if it is to be a large reflector

I have 2 of them at hand ... 1) is a 12" length off the roll crinkled, then uncrinkled then folded into about a 6" square ... and used for flowers and closeups, and 2) is a 20" x 30" cardboard used for portraiture. (Samples below if okay with you)

Yes, I gave it some texturing so as not to get hot spots. Also found the lining of cardboard hot chocolate containers is a really nice diffused silver. I created a surround with one and gave it a foil roof with a gap for the speedlight.

Think I have cracked it!! :D

The transformation from the first to the latest photograph is quite something! Excellent detail of all the lumps and bumps in the last one.

Thanks Edward, think it could still be improved with more light but getting there is half the fun. :)

Thanks for sharing the process Ryan - great to see how others work!
The lighting is great in the last shot, and a big boost of contrast will make the photograph sing.
