Hi all

My wife very kindly bought me a Panasonic Lumix DC-FZ82 a couple of weeks ago. I've always been an aviation fan and with so much air traffic passing across us here, I wanted to get some decent shots. For aircraft that pass over within a reasonable distance and height, the Lumix does the job perfectly and I've been pleased with the results so far. I've taken shots of birds in trees on maximum zoom and again, all has been good. The issue I have is that when a plane passes overhead at a high altitude, the camera will not focus on maximum zoom and lets off a series of beeps. I'm thinking that it's finding it too difficult to find the plane in all that blue sky. Could anyone please let me know how I would resolve this please? Thank you

There are a lot of reasons why you could be having trouble to focus.

You need to upload an image and also tell us the focusing mode and settings that you used, shutter speed, aperture, and where you actually focussed.

If you shoot RAW then I would suggest uploading a RAW file to dropbox or somewhere similar and sharing the link here.

If you don’t shoot RAW then upload a full size jpeg file to Dropbox and share that link.

Try setting the camera to manual focus, infinity should be ok for distant aircraft

Hi and thanks for the replies

@durkarian The camera has only been used in automatic mode so far, as said, it's my first decent camera and it will take me a while to explore the various options available. @Classicbiker, I've set the camera up to manual focus, just waiting now for a high altitude plane to go across and see what the result is.

Many cameras will have problems with auto focus when there is a small target against a largely featureless background. As Classicbiker said, manual focus set to infinity (and beyond?) should work.
